I’ve been pondering new thoughts and reading my old writings as I’m preparing to write my next book.  I came across the Candles and Cake theory and just had to get it out there to share!

If you were sitting at a table with another person and you each had a piece of cake in front of you… if you each ate your cake you would be happy… but you could never enjoy the benefits of eating the other person’s cake. If you wanted to enjoy more than your cake… you would have to take away the other person’s cake.

Unfortunately you might not enjoy the benefits of eating both pieces of cake because you might feel guilty in eating the other person’s cake but they would be unhappy as well because they didn’t get to eat their cake and enjoy it… plus the fact…they might also get mad at you for taking their cake!  A lot of unhappiness is caused by scarcity in this example.

If you were sitting at a table with another person and they had an unlit candle in front of them and you had a lighted candle… you could use your candle to light their candle. In lighting the other person’s candle you would not use up your energy and in addition, you created happiness or Added Value for the other person. Two  candles is double the energy and they light up the whole room so many more people can enjoy the benefits. This also explains the Multiplier Effect of Added Value.

No matter if you are broke or well off… the best way to live is in Profit Mindset! Even if you don’t have any money right now… you can always give more than what is expected. From this day forth…start living in the increase!

Profit or Added Value is Energy

Profits, is generally a highly misunderstood financial business concept. The first time you see profits on a financial statement is when it is called “Gross Profit” …sounds awful! Then the “The Bottom Line” is considered “what is left” after expenses. This is backwards thinking. The creation of Profit or Added Value is the starting point of all enterprise! In fact, there is misguided thinking that “people who profit” are evil and some how taking advantage of others… and this is far from the truth. The ability to produce profits is a good thing.

In reality… all wealth, prosperity, or success begins with The Principles of Profit! Profit is nothing more than ADDED VALUE. Everything starts with “Added Value.” Creating something out of nothing. Giving more then is what you are paid to do. Delightfully giving beyond expectation. Profit is producing more than you consume. Profit is simply making the world a better place.

In school we study how to earn a living with the hopes and dreams of living in prosperity. Unfortunately prosperity does not come from what we earn…therefore, most people never achieve it. Prosperity comes from knowing how to create added value for other’s well being. So the question becomes… “Have you studied Prosperity…or better said…Have you mastered the skills needed to make the lives of others better?” If the answer is NO…then how can you expect to live in prosperity? The skills needed to better the lives of others… needs to be studied with the same intensity as you would study to prepare yourself for work.

Profit or Added Value is always “Created.” Added Value is never acquired by reducing or taking it from others. Profit or Added Value always increases the prosperity or well being of others. Profit is Good. Profit is never bad. People who excel at creating Added Value for others are respected and honored. When you become good at creating Added Value for others… soon people will trust you and then they will bring their valuable resources, ideas, network, and money so that you as a Profit Maker can continue to flourish in creating Added Value!

Profit or Added Value is Energy… it can be unlimited and it is something you create by giving.

PR Secret #3 – Be Quotable!

You will become a public relations gold mine and you will have no problem getting all the free press you want if you master the art of creating one liners that capture the imagination of the press. Some of my favorite sayings that have gotten me feature stories are: “My whole purpose in life is just to make you happy!” …and “My ribs are so tasty that you’ll think that Elvis was dancing on your tongue!” Create many little 2 to 3 minute stories about every important aspect of your business, products, or services. Always share testimonials and give names of people who are raving loyal fans of your company.

I spent 25 years perfecting my award winning Famous Dave’s barbecue sauces. Each sauce was really difficult to develop in its own way because they can be spicy hot, sweet, zesty, vinegary, and fruity all at the same time. Each barbecue sauce has flavor nusances enhanced by fresh grinding the seasonings the day we make the sauce (you can learn more about this on my DVD here). To make great barbecue sauces we use fresh fruit juices and my special tomato sauce that comes from California and is processed and packed within 6 hours of being picked. Our dry seasonings are hand picked and mixed in one state and all the wet ingredients are mixed in another state and then combined at another location so that no one vendor knows what is in our barbecue sauces. I have the highest standards for my premium ingredients, in fact seasoning purveyors claim it is a badge of honor just to be able to say they supply Famous Dave’s barbecue sauce.

My Barbecue Influences…

Real authentic barbecue is found in the little storefront barbecue joints on the Westside of Chicago; the country roadside smokehouses found in the Carolinas, Georgia, Missouri, and Tennessee; and the huge mesquite pits found in Texas. I have been in over 3,000 barbecue joints in the last 35 years, and have tasted the good, the bad, and the mouthwatering! But my first love was Eddie’s Ribs next to the “L” train stop in Logan Square, Chicago. As young as 8 years old, I can remember the huge glassed in wood smoker in the front window where a black gentleman pitmaster would turn the ribs that were smoldering over hickory with a huge fork before slathering a homemade sauce over these tender smoky fall off the bone ribs. The first time I tasted these tasty morsels of mouthwatering smoky ribs charred over the glowing coals of a lively hickory fire and then slathered with a brown sugar, molasses, and apple cider barbecue sauce…I knew from that instant I was going to own my own barbecue restaurant one day and I would have the best barbecue in the world!

Pigs Do Fly! Our 15th Anniversary

On August 1st we celebrated the 15th Anniversary of the Original Famous Dave’s opening.

All day there seemed to be a specialness about the day and the positive vibes was impossible to miss.  We had over a thousand raving loyal fans feasting on barbeque yesterday and the activities really topped off the day. We had Wilbur skiing… and the highlight really was Wilbur flying in… and landing right on the water in front of the restaurant… we got some really great footage of this and John Roach Productions camera guy works exclusively for ESPN and said he was going to try and get this on Sports World! Seeing Wilbur fly in was really exciting and something to see… A Flying Pig!!!  Just proves that Pigs Do Fly… and this is the story of Famous Dave’s. People were lined up across the resort watching Wilbur jump out of the plane and you should have heard the kids scream when they were actually able to make out the parachuting figure was our pig!

We had a great country western band that really rocked the house last night and then the whole night.. but as Kris said in his email to me… the special highlight was the cake cutting and the whole restaurant singing Happy Birthday… I must have drawn over a 1000 Wilburs on paper towels yesterday.

None of this would have been possible without the home office and all our restaurants delivering great barbeque over 15 years… I can’t tell you how many people that were from basically all over the country who stopped by and shared their favorite restaurant and we had people from both coasts… California, New Jersey, Illinois, Michigan, big groups from Iowa, of course Minnesota and Wisconsin…of course everyone said Famous Dave’s was their favorite restaurant!

It was a great celebration, very energizing, and humbling in a way… my heart is filled with gratefulness and  I want to thank all of you for believing in our vision of Famous Dave’s being America’s Official Barbeque Joint! The best is yet to come
